New GriGri belay device coming in 2011

If you climb, or have climbed sometime in the past couple of decades, chances are you’ve used the GriGri, the self-locking belay device manufactured by Petzl. The GriGri has long been one of the workhorses of climbing gear, particularly for top roping.

Now the GriGri is getting a makeover, possibly driven by the use of thinner climbing ropes. The current model only works with ropes between 10mm and 11mm. The GriGri 2, slated for release next year, will work for climbing ropes as thin as 8.9 mm. It’s also 25% lighter and smaller and will feature a “progressive descent control system,” which presumably gives belayers more control when lowering climber.
